Status
I’m a computer scientist who specializes in machine learning and computer vision. I work as a researcher, systems engineer and in-house consultant at Becks Lab, Dept. of Biology, University of Konstanz.
Our project “Aquatic Biodiversity Exploratories” (ABOVE) aims to automate long-term experiments on the evolution of aquatic communities. I am responsible for implementing and deploying ML models and the necessary compute- and storage infrastructure as well as a fleet of flow cytometers for data acquisition.
I have multiple years of experience with software development, datacenter operations and network infrastructure. I’ve worked with a broad variety of systems, ranging from M1000e blades to Kubernetes deployments on DGX clusters. I prefer programming languages with reasonable type systems and functional aspects. Rust is currently a favorite, but for ML prototyping it’s often more convenient to stick to Python. I’m also happy to code in TypeScript, Haskell, C or even Java, depending on the project, and eager to learn new concepts.
A more exhaustive CV is available on request.
Education and Research Interests
I’m a Ph.D. student at the Multimedia Signal Processing Group, where Dietmar Saupe is my advisor.
My research interests include machine learning and computer vision, image and video coding and the perception of visual quality through human observers. There’s more information here, and on Google Scholar and on GitHub.
Currently, I work a lot with local LLM deployments. Their capabilities on limited hardware are intriguing and they offer substantial data protection benefits over hosted solutions, which are indispensable for many applications.
Despite my professional involvement, I’m cautious of the societal and ecological impact of these technologies.

Misc
I like tinkering with technology. I enjoy working with different language paradigms, soldering electronics and experimenting with computer architectures. I’m a free software and open source enthusiast and an avid Linux user, with frequent detours into other operating systems.
I started my journey on a Windows 3 box in the early 2000s and became interested in UNIX after reading about OpenSolaris. From there, I quickly moved on to Linux, which is still my primary platform for most purposes.
I’m intrigued by Plan9 and the Redox operating system. However, this website runs on OpenBSD’s httpd.
Besides that, I’m a mountain enthusiast with quite a few alpine ascents under my belt, but nowadays I mostly enjoy paragliding. I also play guitar in a band: Mending the Mirror, you can find our latest EP here.
